All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914
With musical arrangements by Erick Lichte and Timothy C. Takach
The Western Front, Christmas, 1914. Out of the violence comes a silence, then a song. A German soldier steps into No Man’s Land singing Stille Nacht. Thus begins an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music, peace. Based on a remarkable true story, featuring the highly acclaimed vocal ensemble Cantus. The work is created from letters, war journals, and the poetry and songs of World War I that tell the remarkable story of the Christmas Truce of World War I, where enemy soldiers put down their weapons, stepped into No Man’s Land and celebrated Christmas together, engaging in the transformative gift of music, friendship and peace.

“While it’s a relatively new work, ‘All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914′ has quickly become a Twin Cities favorite. It features the real-life story of men on either side of a war who find a common bond, and a momentary peace, in Christmas carols.”
~ Marianne Combs on MPR’s State of the Arts blog
“It’s not only an outstanding piece of musical theater, but a brilliantly executed production that understands that its power comes from its simplicity.”
~ Pioneer Press
“Rothstein, Cantus artistic director Erick Lichte and their charges have given us a great gift this season, reinvesting the words ‘Peace on Earth’ with their true meaning.”
~ Graydon Royce, Star Tribune
“The singing is absolutely top-notch, and the spoken parts – including words written both by ‘ordinary’ and well-known soldiers – are equally eloquent and moving.”
~ Classics Today
“The most powerful message delivered to the stage since Les Miserables.”
