Each season, we ask ourselves not only what work we are called to make, but what this moment demands of us. As artists and as a community, we carry a responsibility to respond—to listen closely, to reflect honestly, and to act with intention. At Latté Da, we believe music theater is uniquely capable of capturing the possibility as well as the needs of our time. It allows us to hold complexity, to honor contradiction, and to invite both reflection and connection. The works we gather this season are part of an ongoing conversation about who we are, what we carry, and what we are shaping together.

With INDECENT, we turn to a story about artists determined to tell the truth in the face of suppression— an urgent reminder of the enduring relationship between art, censorship, and cultural memory. In ALL IS CALM: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914, we witness a moment of shared humanity that transcends division, offering a profound meditation on peace, even in the midst of conflict. LIZARD BOY invites us into a contemporary myth of identity and belonging, asking what it means to be seen—and to accept oneself—in a world that often resists difference. With the world premiere of SHE’S COME UNDONE, we embark on a deeply human journey of healing and self-reclamation, tracing one woman’s path toward acceptance, resilience, and the possibility of found family. And in collaboration with the University of Minnesota, SPRING AWAKENING provides a vital examination of young people coming of age within systems that seek to silence them—centering the urgency of listening to, and learning from, the next generation.

Taken together, these works reflect a shared commitment: to engage with the present moment not by simplifying it, but by meeting it with curiosity, conviction, and care. They ask us to consider the impact of silence and voice, the necessity of empathy, and the role we each play in shaping a more just and expansive future. To gather in the theater is an act of trust. It is an opportunity to sit together in reflection, to encounter one another more deeply, and to be moved—perhaps even changed—by what we witness. We look forward to sharing that space and this season with you.

INDECENT
SEP 16- OCT 18, 2026

By Paula Vogel
Score & Original Music by Lisa Gutkin & Aaron Halva

Directed by Pirronne Yousefzadeh
Music Direction by Spencer Chandler
Movement Direction by Emily Michaels King

A play about a play—and the artists who risked everything to tell it. Inspired by the true story of Sholem Asch’s seminal Yiddish work, God of Vengeance , and its infamous 1923 obscenity trial, INDECENT is a haunting, klezmer-infused play with music that traces the turbulent journey of a troupe determined to stage a work deemed “indecent.” As their story unfolds across continents and decades, so too does a powerful meditation on censorship, nationalism and the policing of queer love. At once tender and thunderously relevant, this breathtaking theatrical experience shines a light on the enduring struggle between artistic expression and societal control. In a moment when questions of whose stories are “acceptable” feel increasingly urgent, INDECENT invites us to bear witness to the courage of artists, the cost of silence and the unshakable power of theater itself.

ALL IS CALM: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914
NOV 24 - DEC 27, 2026

Written by Peter Rothstein
Vocal Arrangements by Erick Lichte & Timothy C. Takach

Directed by Peter Rothstein
Music Direction by Lara Bolton
Original Music Direction by Erick Lichte

The return of a beloved Latté Da tradition. “Hands down, the most emotionally moving Christmas show I’ve ever seen” (TheaterMania). ALL IS CALM: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914 brings founding artistic director Peter Rothstein home to direct this unforgettable, music-driven act of remembrance—one that has moved audiences for almost two decades with its quiet power and authenticity. On a cold Christmas Eve along the Western Front, as soldiers sat on opposite sides of the battlefield, something extraordinary happened. The guns fell silent. Emerging into no-man’s-land, enemies met not with violence, but with song. Drawn from letters, diaries and firsthand accounts, this profoundly moving piece is told through stirring a cappella harmonies that illuminate a fleeting moment of shared humanity in the midst of war. In a world that feels increasingly polarized and entrenched, this story of soldiers stepping out of their trenches to sing together offers not naïve sentimentality, but radical empathy and an invitation to rediscover the light that can emerge even in the darkest of times.

LIZARD BOY
FEB 3 - 28, 2027

Book, Music, and Lyrics by Justin Huertas
Directed by Joey Miller
Music Direction by Isabella Dawis

An indie-rock musical like you’ve never seen before ! In this Midwest Premiere, LIZARD BOY bursts onto the stage as a funny, quirky, and deeply heartfelt coming-of-age story about a reluctant hero learning to embrace what makes him different. Trevor has spent years hiding in the shadows to conceal his scaly green skin.... until one extraordinary day forces him to step into the spotlight and decide if he has the courage to save the world… and his new crush. With a genre-blending indie-rock score and the pulse of a live concert, this threeperson chamber musical transforms comic book mythology into something intimate, offbeat and electrifying. Winner of six Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards and three Drama Desk Award nominations, LIZARD BOY is a wonder-filled journey of queer identity and self-acceptance that reminds us that you don’t need a cape to be a hero. Sometimes, what sets you apart is a superpower.

SHE’S COME UNDONE
MAR 31 - MAY 2, 2027

WORLD PREMIERE

Based on the novel by Wally Lamb

Music & Lyrics by Michael Holland
Book by Darrah Cloud & David Simpatico
Directed by Justin Lucero

A powerful new musical born at Latté Da, from the acclaimed team behind 2022 hit TWELVE ANGRY MEN: A NEW MUSICAL. SHE'S COME UNDONE takes to the musical stage as a sweeping, deeply human coming-of-age story about a young woman navigating shame, body image, trauma and ultimately self-forgiveness. Adapted from Wally Lamb’s #1 New York Times bestselling novel, this world premiere musical brings together a team of artists known for balancing muscular storytelling with emotional intimacy to create a work that is as psychologically rich as it is theatrically bold. At once intimate and expansive, this ambitious new musical invites us into the fragile landscape of a life in progress, charting Dolores Price’s deeply human journey through pain, resilience, and the long, uneven path toward healing. A story of loss that ultimately blossoms into the quiet, hard-won grace of family found.
